COVID19 Immigration Canada Update

On May 5, 2020, The Minister of Immigration spoke to the Canadian Bar Association regarding immigration in Canada at the present moment. He confirmed that the fundamental objective for Canada is to grow our economy through immigration. Growth is critical to the future of the country, as such, the country is open for business. Historically, Canada has a long-standing trend toward immigration and will continue to facilitate this objective for the country.

COVID19 has resulted in the government working differently. Critical foreign workers are allowed into Canada and have been prioritized to facilitate their entry. There is a great deal of discretion given to the Canada Border Services Agency, whose mandate is to protect the health and safety of Canadians. Those who need to come must have a good reason to come to Canada.

Having said that, anyone who currently has a work permit, may re-enter Canada, as the work permit will be honored. New applicants in the essential services areas, such as food and healthcare, as well as those who are playing a vital role in Canada, will be prioritized work permit applications. In addition, new work permits are a being adjudicated. It is important to note that only those who have been in the US for 14 days may apply at the border for a work permit.

Canada views the student program as a robust avenue to grow Canada. This is a priority for immigration. Students who are here are allowed to take their courses online. Students with visas are allowed to take fifty percent of their course load online if they are not able to travel to Canada.
